The judiciary’s Defender Services account received funding to increase the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) panel attorney hourly rates from $148 to $152 for non-capital work and from $190 to $195 for capital work performed on or after January 1, 2020. Where the appointment of counsel occurred before January 1, 2020, the new hourly compensation rates apply to that portion of services provided on or after the effective date.

Where the appointment of counsel occurred before February 15, 2019, the new hourly compensation rates apply to that portion of services provided on or after the effective date.

The General Services Administration (GSA) has announced an increase in the reimbursement mileage rates for privately owned automobiles, motorcycles, and airplanes when used for official travel. The new reimbursement mileage rates went into effect on January 1, 2018, for travel performed on or after that date. These rates apply to all judges, employees, and jurors and are as follows:
Automobiles $0.545 per mile
Motorcycles $0.515 per mile
Airplanes $1.21 per mile

The hourly rates payable for providing legal representation in CJA matters will increase from $129 to $132 for non-capital work and from $183 to $185 for capital work performed on or after May 5, 2017. The case compensation maximum amounts (excluding expenses) for non-capital representations will also increase from $7,200 to $7,300 for direct criminal appeals and from $2,100 to $2,200 for appeals of other matters.
